Kwara APC: Saraki and Lai Muhammad’s Camp Battle Over Party Leadership

The battle for leadership soul of the ruling All Progressive Congress in Kwara State is taking another dimension as the two leading camps exchange banters over who owns the party in the State.

The warring groups are suspected loyalists of Saraki Camp led by Ishola Balogun Fulani and the loyalists of Lai Muhammad suspected to be Pro-Buhari who are calling for expulsion of the former group for alleged anti-party activities having shown its displeasure to the national leadership of the party and recently signed a pact which have seen score of national lawmakers including the Kwara State representatives at both chambers defected to the opposition PDP.
According to the report which emanated from the meeting of the party stakeholders in Kwara State, held on Sunday, 29 July 2018 at Oro, Kwara State. The statement which was signed by Minister of Information and Culture Alhaji Lai Muhammad resolved that:
1). That the Balogun Fulani-led Kwara APC executive committee be immediately dissolved and a fresh congress that will include all Kwara APC members and those who are just coming into the party be held at the various levels to constitute a new executive.

2). That all those who got appointments by deceit, hiding under the facade of being party men and women, should immediately resign such appointments or be fired.

3). That the recent gale of defections has now put the APC in a position of true majority in the National Assembly, as those who remain are the ones who are truly committed to the ideals of our great Party

4). That all members and supporters of our great party restate their unflinching support for President Muhammadu Buhari and assure him of a harvest of votes from Kwara State in the 2019 General Elections.

5)  That all members should remain calm because there is no cause for alarm.

However, the Ishola Balogun Fulani led executive reacted negatively to the statement issued by the Lai Muhammad group. According to a statement which Balogun Fulani issued out and available to this medium, it reads…

“My attention has been drawn to a communiqué purportedly issued by the minister of Information and Culture, Alh Laid Mohammed, calling for the dissolution of the Kwara state executive committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by me.”

I want to state as follow:

a- That I remain the authentic chairman of APC in Kwara state.

b- That my executive  committee members were duly elected as APC executives in Kwara state for a period of four years.

c- That myself and other members of the Kwara APC executive committee remain members of the party.

d- That only last Wednesday, I attended a meeting of APC States chairmen forum in Abuja.

e- That we were not aware of any APC stakeholders meeting in Oro, as neither myself as the state party chairman nor our Kwara south senatorial district chairman, Alhaji Jimoh Balogun convened or attended the meeting.

f- We therefore urge members of our great party and general public to remain calm and discountenanced the statement credited to Alh Laid Mohammed.”
In his own capacity as the spokesperson of the Ishola Balogun-Fulani led State Executive Committee of the APC, Tunji Buhari also wrote separately to dismissed the insinuation coming from Lai Muhammad’s quater that their group would be ejected out of the party.

He expressed that – “Ishola Balogun-Fulani led State Executive Committee of the APC is a product of law and due process. It was an executive duly inaugurated by the NEC of the APC as the authentic and legitimate. It’s not a jankara executives that Lai Mohammed and his other irrelvant Abuja-based colleagues wanted unsuccessfully to foist on the party during the last congress.”

“Alhaji Lai Mohammed lacks the locus to call for the dissolution of the lawfully elected members of the State Executive Committee of the APC in Kwara. He is neither a member of the State Executive Committee nor a member of the APC National Executive Committee.”

“Worst still, he’s not recognised as a leader of the party even in his Oro ancestral home, how much more across Kwara State. A man that did not attend the last congresses of the APC nor vote during the process does not have the standing to call for the dissolution of the executives that lawfully emerged from that process.”

“The tragedy of a character like Lai Mohammed is that they forgot that we are in a democracy where the rule of law reigns supreme. No matter how much they try, the only lawfully recognised executives of the APC in Kwara State at the moment is the Balogun Fulani led executives. No amount of name calling and blackmail can change that.”
