The Ilorin University Medical Students Association (ILUMSA) is set to host what is expected to be the largest gathering of medical students across the African continent as over 3000 medical students would berth in the ancient city of Ilorin to participate in 2018 edition of Nigerian Medical Students Association (NiMSA) Games tagged ‘THE EMIRATES EXPERIENCE”
The event which can be dubbed as Medical Students Olympics is slated for August 26th to September 1st of this year, is a biennial sporting festival which brings together all medical students across the nation to compete in about 22 different sporting activities such as football, basketball, handball, voleyball, swimming, Long jump, marathon, athletics, Chess, Sudoku and host of others.
38 accredited medical schools will join the host school, University of Ilorin to slug it out for medals in different sporting events and it promises to be the best in the history of the competition.
At the Press Conference and Logo Unveiling ceremony which came up on Monday at Unilorin Auditorium Basement to herald the event, the deputy director of University of Ilorin Sports Council Dr. (Mrs) Ajadi who ably represented her superior, the Director of the University of Ilorin Sports Council, Prof. Obiyemi in her address saluted the NiMSA leadership for their wisdom in incorporating sporting activities into their rigorous academic excercise. She said, aside from the fact that sporting excercise is medically beneficial to participants health system, unity, love and patriotism is also promoted through it. She then pledged the University management supports and readiness to make the event a memorable one.
Animasahun Seyi Emmanuel who is Director of the Standing Committee on NiMSA Games (SCONGA) of the Nigerian Medical Students Association(NiMSA) in his address said ILUMSA won the hosting right of the competition during NiMSA general meeting which came up at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria not only because the body is a key stakeholder in NiMSA but also, for her strides as one of the most respected, finest, vibrant and best medical school amongst equals.
While speaking on how important is the event to Ilorin Medical school students, Animashaun said the event will commemorate 40th anniversary of the school and 50th anniversary of NiMSA at the same time. He also said that “the NiMSA game usually showcases that what is obtainable amongst medical students is beyond academic excellence alone, it shows the dexterity and dynamicity of medical students as a set of people who can excelled in all field of human endeavors including sports, politics, literature, enterpreneurship and others.
On the level of preparedness of ILUMSA, he said all efforts are in place to give all the 38 participating medical schools “Emirates Experience” more than what they received during the NiMSA South West Convention which was hosted by the school in August 2016.
Also, in order to surpass the record of their perfomances during the last edition of the game which was hosted by University of Benin Medical School in 2016, the participants whom will flag ILUMSA flags are already training hard in high spirit and ambience.
Animashaun while appreciating the supports and cooperation of the University managements especially the sports council unit, however said that part of the challenges facing by the host is finance as the estimated budget which is ₦7, 519m is yet to be realised but with optimism that it would be garnered in couple of weeks.
The logo for the event, which was adjudged as very beautiful by all present was designed by Akande Eniola who is also a medical Student of the University and the Chairman, Publicity Committee of the SCONGA Directorate.
