Former Hon. Commissioner of Environment & Tourism and a Guber Aspirant in Kwara State Dr Bola Olaosebikan OON has called for immediate overhauling of environmental management strategies and intervention programs in Kwara State. The Guber aspirant Dr Olaosebikan said this in his sympathy message to thousands of people affected in the recent heavy downpour which occurred in Ilorin, the Kwara state capital recently.
The flooding affected many places in Ilorin such as Okelele, Aduralere, Amilegbe, Alagbado, Sobi specialist Hospital, Akerebiata, Kuntu-Oja Road, Dada area, Harmony estate, Mubo street, and many communities where thousands of people were displaced and properties were destroyed.
According to Dr Bola Olaosebikan, OON said ” this flooding havoc could have been prevented if the environment management master plan for Kwara State is been implemented. We have a blueprint and action plan for the capital and urban cities in Kwara State.
“There should be regular clearing of drains and channels. The state waste management program should be well managed to Percy dumping of solid wastes drains and channels to avoid blockages. As Kwara State Commissioner of Environment IN 2005 I ensured that our policies and programs on the environment were pro-active and effective.
But over time, there has been severe neglect of various environmental strategies, programs and total breakdown of Kwara State clan and green program. Kwara State must revive sustainable policies on environment to prevent environmental havoc in our State.
Kwara. State government should implement ecological programs in the budget and utililize ecological funds from Abuja properly for projects intended, to safe life’s and prevent ecological crisis in the state. The state ministry of environment needs to be rejuvenated.

I am also calling on the state Government to deliver the landfill project at Gbagede which was stated in 2005. I believe this project can safe Ilorin, the Kwara state capital from problems of solid waste disposal, flooding, generate energy and turn waste to wealth.
“So in my view, environment must be a top priority of the incoming administration in 2019” declared Dr Bola Olaosebikan.
